Recital: What to Look For

Recital: What to Look For

With only one more day until recital, I was reflecting this morning about what I have seen in practice the last two weeks.

What has really amazed me is the kids’ joy!

Each student I have seen is excited about performing in the recital!

They do not seem nervous or shy — but confident and ready.

Here is what is most amazing to me. It does not seem to matter to them that their skill level is not quite up to “performance level.”

As adults, we feel we must have our act together before we “put it out there.” However, these kids are happy and secure sharing what they have learned so far — even if it’s not yet a “perfect 10.”

So tomorrow, be sure to be watching for this. It is the essence of the whole recital.

Watch for more than how technically correct a child performs their gymnastics – watch for how they feel about it. You will see, like I have seen in practice, their confidence, joy, and enthusiasm for this sport.

The children know their skills will improve.

Tomorrow, they are excited just to share with you where they are now.

Should not we as adults also be as comfortable just to share where we are now – knowing that our skills, too, will improve?

I CAN DO! School of Gymnasitcs

I CAN DO! School of Gymnasitcs

We are very excited about the I CAN DO! curriculum and we believe you will be too! This is a well-developed program that we think is the most innovative and best progressive gymnastic program available for young students — without having to drive to Wichita! And I CAN DO! goes beyond gymnastics…

Gymnastics is a great foundational sport for children. Physically, it helps develop strength, balance, coordination, flexibility, agility, endurance, and poise. Through gymnastics, children can develop the confidence to try other sports and also learn that physical activity can be fun!

At I CAN DO! we believe that, beyond the physical benefits, gymnastics is an excellent tool for helping children develop confidence — if they’re not “gifted gymnasts”! Our equipment is specially designed for little hands. “Motorics” (for preschool-aged children) features two different ladders, a balance beam, slide, parallel bars and rolling pin, plus “attachables” which can be arranged in any number of combinations of varying height by attaching to “stackies”.  Because the bars are small enough for children to grasp securely, and equipment is low enough to the ground that children feel comfortable, students can quickly learn to move through a rotation, developing strength and coordination and confidence as they realize, “I can DO this!”

Our “Junior Gym Equipment” for elementary school-aged children is very portable and adjustable. It accommodates beginner and intermediate skills. The size of the equipment, besides being less intimidating than standard gymnastic equipment, allows children to DO the gymnastic skills themselves, rather than be “carried through” a skill by an instructor. Besides being a confidence builder, this helps even struggling gymnasts develop strength.

The I CAN DO! curriculum has age-appropriate gymnastic skillbooks as the core of the program. Each skillbook contains progressive gymnastic skills which are signed by the instructor as the gymnast masters each skill. Ribbons are earned for completing an entire section (equipment event) of the skillbook. Gymnasts are initially placed by age. Once they start in a skillbook, they proceed at their own ability rate and move on to the next level when they complete their skillbook. Skillbooks usually take approximately one year to complete.

I CAN DO! skillbooks are great tools for teaching goal setting. We teach children about setting worthy goals, the value of persistence and the importance of attitude, all within the context of gymnastics. They will have fun moving these principles beyond gymnastics!

At I CAN DO! School of Gymnastics we love gymnastics and we love kids.  We hope you will enjoy our programs and becoming a part of our growing family.

Observation Time

Observation Time

To better teach our students, it is standard practice for parents/guardians to drop off children for class or sit in our waiting room. This allows the instructor to have the students’ undivided attention, creating a safer and more focused learning environment.  However, we do realize parents may want to watch their child participating, and progressing, as well.  Therefore, during the first class of every month parents/guardians are invited to observe their student’s progress.  Feel free to set up chairs in the gym or dance room.

Safety

Safety

Students are only allowed in the class area while their class is in session.  Instructors are not available to watch children before class time and many classes run back-to-back so please, be on time to pick up your child.  Children should always wait INSIDE until parents/guardians come to get them.  Gymnasts are discouraged from leaving the gym floor during class, so please be sure they have used the restroom and little ones have been given adequate hugs before class!

Only students and instructors are permitted on the gymnastics floor and equipment.
All other non-participants are not permitted at any time on the equipment or mats.
